RCOL is offering your parish a free domain name for your parish website!
Why would we do this?
Consider the following examples:
When you want your local council website you have a good chance that typing your-locality.gov.uk will be correct:
When you want your local university website you have a good chance that typing your-locality.ac.uk will be correct:
When you want your local health authority website you have a good chance that typing your-locality.nhs.uk will be correct:
So now RCOL is applying the same logic to church websites:
How is this possible?
As all the domains are based on the name of your parish area as a sub-domain of r-c.org.uk there is no cost to RCOL.
To apply for your own parish domain name please consider your surrounding area & the other parishes in your deanery or diocese. The aim of this is to choose a name which is specific to your parish &, where possible, will not cause confusion with other parishes nearby.
Then, before sending me the name & area of the parish for which you are applying for a domain name, use a search engine & also talk to your parish priest. Is anyone already producing or planning a website? There is no point duplicating other's work!
Where conflict arises RCOL will be the final arbiter.
How does it work?
Many parishes now have their own websites. Some have their own domain names & some are on ISP webspace. The domain name RCOL offers is designed to help find these existing sites. Where a parish has a domain name the RCOL domain redirects to the existing domain. Where a parish has an ISP name the RCOL domain can be used to disguise the existing name.
Another option is to have your new domain & website hosted by RCOL. Unfortunately this cannot be done for free & there is a cost of 5.00 pounds per year. RCOL hope that you will find this a very reasonable fee.
Finally, this offer is intended for Roman Catholic Parishes, so any website that is not appropriate to this purpose will be terminated immediately.
